40 years ago today… June 1, 2007
Today on BBC (c/o NPR), I heard a piece about “Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band”, released, yes, 40 years ago today. The piece was specifically about “A Day in the Life”, a song that has terrorized me from my youth. I love most of it, but when each chorus ends, I grit my teeth, grip the handlebars of the elliptical, and brace myself for the frighteningly maddening rise of cacophonous instruments. Well, today I have been given some peace, since I learned all about how and why these interludes exist in the song (see this for a brief explanation). And, as the saying goes, “knowledge is power”. Now, like when I was six and my brother made me watch all of the “Nightmare on Elm Street Movies” and I would talk through them the whole time, saying things like “Oh, that’s totally fake”, and “You can see where his makeup blends into his neck”, etc., I can master my fear by engaging in metacognition.
