I went to visit Abba today. As he told my mother this morning, “I’m just trying to stay alive.” Whenever I think about how I’d like to be famous and influential, I think about him and realize that there are greater judges of a life fully lived. Here are some of Abba’s views on marriage, love, and other things that have shaped who I am…
** Never speak to your spouse out of anger; once you say something, you can never take it back (advice given to myself and my husband at our wedding)
** Never obtain a higher degree of education than your husband (that means you better make sure he’s getting a PhD, too!)
** Your children must be your number one priority. To him, this means supporting them financially, but not at the expense of raising them. Young children need a mother, and there is no occupation more noble or necessary.
** Never pick sides in your friends’ divorce. If they end up getting back together, they’ll both hate you.
** Love unconditionally, give freely; not because you will be rewarded in turn, but because it is right.
